CHAPTER I

It was cool for June, and Jil Mathews pulled her sweater tightly around her as she stepped out into the evening air. She inhaled deeply, thinking to herself that even the smoggy city air was refreshing after twelve hours of the antiseptic hospital atmosphere of the Intensive Care Unit. All medical care facilities reeked of the aroma, and Bellevue Hospital Center was no different. Even after many years, she had not grown used to it. The day had been another hard one, and until the practice of under- staffing and over-filling the unit changed, her patients were at risk. She was just thankful the Lord was giving her the strength to help those poor souls.
Her feet hurt, but she decided to walk the ten or so blocks to her place because she had to pick up a few things, and thought to treat herself to dinner at the same time. She hated to eat out alone, but there wasn't a darn thing in the fridge. Though it was a little out of the way, she decided on Chinese at The Wondrous Wok. The food was excellent, and if that nice waiter was there (What was his name? Ahh, Henry Lee, she remembered) it would be a plus. On the last outing with her friend Ruthie, this delightful young man was surprised that a nurse did not know of his hero, a medical research genius whose name escaped her even now. Lee had described the man and his career in a detailed and animated way which both informed and entertained them. Jil hoped both the restaurant and Lee were not too busy tonight. She would never find out.
As she turned right on Twenty-Second Street and headed toward the restaurant, trying to decide between Wor Su Duck or General Sao's Chicken, a gloved hand reached out from a doorway and pulled her violently toward another gloved hand that held a long needle-like instrument.
The tip of the ice pick entered the ear canal dead center. There was little resistance to the powerful thrust of its sharp point, and the whole blade entered the brain. The Killer gave the pointed shaft a little wiggle "to stir things up" and withdrew it. He looked up and down the street and seeing no one, gently lowered the body to the ground. He laid the ice pick on the sidewalk next to the body and then carefully removed the wallet from his victim's handbag. He opened it and slipped in something taken from his pocket. Replacing the wallet in the handbag, he slid the zipper closed, stood, smiled, and walked slowly towards the corner. His cold dark eyes viewed the telephone booth at the end of the street; it was now time for their wake-up call.
